Jet AirwaysNSE 3.16 % Ltd's 69-year-old founder Naresh Goyal, who started out as an assistant in a travel agency, wove together charm, persistence and consummate dealmaking to build India's biggest full-service carrier. 

Now, his penchant for control has emerged as a major obstacle as the indebted airline tries to negotiate a rescue deal, several people who have worked closely with him or known him over the years told Reuters on condition of anonymity. 

Although the Indian air travel market is the world's fastest growing, at about 20 per cent a year, it is also hobbled by cut-throat competition and chronically low fares. To stay afloat, Jet is cutting flights on some non-profitable routes and trying to raise cash by monetising assets. 

Country's largest lender State Bank of India has ordered a forensic audit of Jet Airways (India) Ltd.’s books for the period between April 2014 and March 2018, according to sources in the bank. The cash-strapped carrier has been grappling with financial woes for many months.

SBI, which is the lead banker to Jet Airways’ over Rs 8,000-crore loans, has mandated Ernst & Young to conduct a forensic audit of the airline’s books, sources said, adding that the process has already begun.

The airline has been struggling to keep afloat following three consecutive quarterly losses of over Rs 1,000 crore each.

The bank's action comes at a time when the Naresh Goyal-promoted airline is in talks with potential investors to raise funds to tide over its liquidity crisis.

"...it was decided to conduct a forensic audit of the accounts of Jet Airways for the period Apr. 1, 2014 to Mar. 31, 2018," SBI sources said.

When contacted, an SBI spokesperson declined to comment saying, "it's the policy of the bank not to comment on individual accounts."

Emails sent for confirmation from the airline and EY also did not elicit immediate responses.

The audit was ordered following a complaint of alleged financial irregularities in Jet Airways’ accounts by a whistleblower, the sources said.

"The forensic audit has been mandated to E&Y LLP and the firm has already started the process," the sources said.

In August, the government had ordered an inspection of books and papers of the airline. The outcome of the probe, however, is awaited.

Besides, there were also reports about alleged siphoning of funds to the tune of Rs 5,000 crore by the promoter.

With three back-to-back quarterly losses and a net debt of Rs 8,052 crore as of September 2018, the airline is working on ways to raise funds and reduce costs. The cash crunch has been so bad that it is paying salaries in tranches for months now.

Last month, Jet Airways Chief Executive Officer Vinay Dube had said the airline was in active discussions with various investors to secure sustainable financing.

The Mumbai-based airline in which Etihad Airways also owns 24 percent, is negotiating a deal with the Gulf carrier to offload another 25 percent holding, to mop up funds.

Last month, there were talks that the Tatas were interested in buying out Goyal’s stake from the airline and merge it with Vistara.

"The airline is his life and he built it from nothing, you have to give him respect for that," said one of the former employees. "But ... the airline business can be unforgiving." 

In 2012, Kingfisher Airlines, founded by Indian businessman Vijay Mallya, went bust for want of cash, leaving its lessors and creditors with pending dues.

सूत्रों ने बताया कि एसबीआई, जेट एयरवेज के लिए 8,000 करोड़ रुपये से ज्यादा के ऋण के लिए अग्रणी बैंकर है, ने एयरस्टीन की किताबों के फोरेंसिक ऑडिट करने के लिए अर्न्स्ट एंड यंग को अनिवार्य किया है, सूत्रों ने कहा कि प्रक्रिया पहले ही शुरू हो चुकी है।

एयरलाइन 1,000 करोड़ रुपये से अधिक की लगातार तीन तिमाही घाटे के बाद आगे बढ़ने के लिए संघर्ष कर रही है।

बैंक की कार्रवाई उस समय आती है जब नरेश गोयल-प्रमोटेड एयरलाइन संभावित निवेशकों के साथ बातचीत कर रही है ताकि वे अपनी तरलता संकट से जूझ सकें।

एयरलाइन और ईवाई से पुष्टि के लिए भेजे गए ईमेल भी तत्काल प्रतिक्रिया प्राप्त नहीं करते थे।

सूत्रों ने बताया कि जेट एयरवेज के खातों में कथित वित्तीय अनियमितताओं की शिकायत के बाद लेखापरीक्षा का आदेश दिया गया था।

सूत्रों ने बताया, "फोरेंसिक ऑडिट को ई एंड वाई एलएलपी को अनिवार्य किया गया है और फर्म ने प्रक्रिया शुरू कर दी है।"

अगस्त में, सरकार ने एयरलाइन की किताबों और कागजात का निरीक्षण करने का आदेश दिया था। हालांकि, जांच का नतीजा इंतजार कर रहा है।

सितंबर 2018 तक तीन बैक-टू-बैक त्रैमासिक घाटे और 8,052 करोड़ रुपये का शुद्ध ऋण, एयरलाइन धन जुटाने और लागत को कम करने के तरीकों पर काम कर रही है। नकदी की कमी इतनी खराब रही है कि वह महीनों के लिए शाखाओं में वेतन का भुगतान कर रही है।

पिछले महीने, जेट एयरवेज के मुख्य कार्यकारी अधिकारी विनय दुबे ने कहा था कि एयरलाइन स्थायी निवेशकों को सुरक्षित रखने के लिए विभिन्न निवेशकों के साथ सक्रिय चर्चा में थी।

पिछले महीने, वार्ताएं थीं कि टाटा एयरलाइन से गोयल की हिस्सेदारी खरीदने और विस्टारा के साथ विलय करने में रूचि रखते थे।

2012 में, भारतीय व्यापारी विजय माल्या द्वारा स्थापित किंगफिशर एयरलाइंस, नकद की मांग के लिए बस्ट चला गया, इसके बकाया राशि और लेनदारों को लंबित बकाया राशि के साथ छोड़ दिया गया।
