All Indian Airlines are Continuously Canceling Flights due to Fewer Passengers in the Corona Era

Traveling by plane during the COVID-19 pandemic is difficult for passengers, carriers, airports, health agencies, and governments. The number of people flying has greatly decreased. In 2019, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced 4.5 billion worldwide passenger departures on 39 million scheduled flights (117 per flight on average). In 2019, revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs) traveled totaled 8.7 trillion (with 1911 km per departure on average).
Among all sectors affected by Covid-19, aviation suffered in two respects. Most evidently, there was a concern for contagion. No other industry relies on cramming you into close quarters with outsiders for hours on end while transporting potentially diseased people from one continent to another. There was also the tumbling market, which was less overt. It is a well-known fact in aviation that air transport correlates to GDP. People travel more when they have more capital. But amid this historic downturn, no one was buying plane tickets.
In the past, Airlines have only been stung by one or the other of these factors. Travel was dangerous during Sars, but the world economy did not collapse. Money was tight after the 2008 financial crisis, but traveling was not a health concern. Before this year, these blows have never been delivered in combination in the 110 years since the commercial flight began.
A credit shell is a credit note created against a canceled PNR and can be used by the passenger for a future booking.
IndiGo, India's biggest domestic airline, has refunded approximately Rs. 1,030 crore to customers. "IndiGo completes disbursement of 99.95 % consumer credit shells and refunds," InterGlobe Aviation Ltd's airline said in a statement.
In September 2020, the Supreme Court ordered airlines to automatically refund fares booked for travel until May 24, 2020.
SpiceJet, India's low-cost carrier, was unable to repay passengers' credit shells. National carrier Air India is still yet to refund passengers' complete credit shells. Air Asia and Vistara are yet to return the credit shell to travellers.
AirIndia and other domestic Airlines are severely impacted by the lockout and pandemic-related travel restrictions. According to Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, revenues of major Indian scheduled carriers dropped from Rs 46,711 crore in April-September 2019 to about Rs 11,810 crore in the same period in 2020.
Desperate to survive, all major Indian airlines have taken drastic steps in the last year, such as dismissing staff, slashing wages, and sending employees on unpaid leave.
