Hidden reasons of Jet Airways Plunge

                                                                                                                             By  Preeti Tanwar
Hidden reasons of Jet Airways Plunge
Doesn’t that look aberrant that all of a sudden, India’s second largest private carrier Jet Airways, an outstanding profit-making company with zero debt initially reached at the verge of shutting down along with Rs 8000 crore debt over its head? This dramatic nosedive of Jet airways somehow seems skeptical.
Hike in global crude prices and declining rupee were the common challenges ahead of all the airlines. But why only Jet Airways sank badly?
The man behind the whole ravage of Jet Airways is its founder itself. Yes, you read it absolutely correct Mr. Naresh Goyal, founder and ex-chairman of the company.  It looks so strange that how can a founder himself ruin his beloved company? Of course a selfish person can, when an augury of a company’s shut down is quite clear at the director and management level. And who was there in the management team? Goyal himself, who exerted full control over the company and had a single management team, headed by himself, running all Jet's operations.
Before announcing about the huge loss-making situation of the company to its lenders, shareholders, and employees, he generated 1lakh 45 thousand crore revenue to his personal account. He didn’t want to get bankrupt like Mr. Vijay Mallya at the time of Kingfisher airline’s shutdown.
When a company is about to sink, then usually management look for acquisition, joint venture or mergers help for revival. But Mr. Goyal thought for only his personal benefits, not for the welfare of the company.
·         How it was an outstanding profit making company initially?
It’s a proven fact that if a company is a major contributor in a country’s economic growth, then government policy plan by DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) make a direct impact on its business. If government policies are in a company’s favor, the company will automatically rise and vice-versa is also true. Let’s understand it with a real scenario happened.
No doubt, Mr. Naresh Goyal was a strong skilled man in building a network with the politicians, beaurocrats and other influential people. Since 1992, when UPA government was in governance Mr. Naresh Goyal became successful in building good relations with them. It helped Mr. Naresh Goyal to have government policies plan in his company’s favor. That’s how Mr. Naresh Goyal became successful in getting Air India’s prime time and all peak time slots for to its Airlines. Henceforth, Jet Airways all seats started getting full and it became a huge profit making company. That’s how when UPA was in governance, Jet airways was running a successful business.

·         How come an incredible profit-making company started losing?
Mr. Goyal proved to be a best entrepreneur, but a weak in management skills. His mismanagement and wrong intention of leadership has sunk the company. Let’s see how.
Mr. Naresh Goyal centralized all the control and right of its company to a single management team, headed by himself.
1.       For his personal profit-making he started purchasing aircraft on quite higher price which he could purchase on discounted rates and started taking its direct benefit in his personal account. He started doing unwanted up gradation in his airline, which required more expenditure and again he took it’s a benefit in his personal account.
2.        He decided to acquire Air Sahara in 2006 for $500 million despite being advised by advisors of paying too much for Air Sahara. And again he took the benefit in his personal account. This decision troubled the airline for years and later with additional costs, taxes as well as legal and manpower issues.
3.       Aspired to extend business on international routes he ordered 22 wide-body aircraft and showed his mismanagement skills by hiring the staff like pilot, air hostesses, technical staff, non-technical staff and hospitality staff quite early before the approval of DGCA.
4.        In 2011-12 when Jet Airways faced its first financial crunch, Goyal used his networking skills and eventually sold 24% of its airline’s stakes to Etihad airlines for nearly $400 million. Being a stakeholder, Etihad looked forward to have a bit of control to run a sagacious business but Goyal interpreted it as a takeover of his beloved company. A company is bigger than a founder. The founder may want total control but business is not about the individual, business is all about practicality, profit and futuristic outlook.
5.       In order to compete with low-cost carriers SpiceJet and Indigo, Mr. Goyal decided to lower down its fare prices without reducing its expensive services. Jet airline was bleeding money but still Goyal configured its plane-like palaces with 300 naked seats much below the global standard.
6.       Mr. NG believed in alluring customers with its airline’s executive class luxuries along with lowering down the fare price under competition.  They paid higher salaries than most rivals. Outsourced services were also getting paid higher from the airline in comparison to the other rivals. They spent more than they earned and kept accruing debts.
With the undue advantage from the UPA government, the company was running in profit, but it went in loss after the NDA government. When NDA came into governance the legal prime slots of AirIndia was given back to its deserving holder which originally was shifted to Jet Airways.
Consequently, airline piled up with a huge debt of over Rs. 8000 croresFavourism could have been on Mr. Goyal’s side once again, but the crucial general election has taken all the limelight and no one is bothered about Jet.
So, Mr. Naresh Goel anticipated the airline’s plunge and resigned from the chairmanship at a perfect time quietly and left the entire mess in lender’s (especially SBI) hand without showing any loyalty towards his dedicated employees, lenders and outsourced companies. Being an NRI he is not liable for any scrutiny. He has smartly chosen it to watch the entire show in a relaxed manner without any liability on his head.
Mr. NG has lovingly bid goodbye to its employees by just thanking them for their dedication and contribution towards the company. Livelihood runs by money Mr. Goyal, not just by appreciation. But who cares when their own account is unlimitedly full.
Passport of Shri Naresh Goyal and All other Company Directors to be Seized
Jet Airways Employees demand,

All India Jet Airways officers and staff association has demanded from Mumbai Police that the Passport of Jet Airways promoter Naresh Goyal, Board of Directors and senior management of the company should be seized so that they could not leave the country.

Criticalist Jet Airways has the bidding date (the last date of the auction) and no big name has so far been exposed for the bid. Meanwhile, All India Jet Airways Officers and Staff Association has demanded from Mumbai Police that the passport of Jet Airways promoter Naresh Goyal, Board of Directors and senior management of the company should be seized so that they can not leave the country.

Association president and NCP legislator Kiran Pawaskar recently met the Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Barve. He asked the Mumbai Police Commissioner to register an FIR against all the top management officials of Naresh Goyal and Jet Airways to shut down all services of the airline.

In a two-page letter to Barve, Pawaskar demanded that it be necessary to avoid Kingfisher Airlines and Condabata aviation situations. Let the owners of these two companies run away from the country without paying salaries to avoid criminal action. He wrote that Mumbai Police should register an FIR against Jet Airways Management and seize their passports to prevent them from leaving the country. Pawaskar, who led two Protest March to get justice for Jet Airways employees, wrote, "Take steps to seize passports of company's chairmen, the board of Directors and senior management officers because many of them have foreign citizenship And he is working in India under the work permit. If they do not take action, they may leave the country.

Pawskar-led delegation met the company management twice in April and told them that neither the promoters nor the lenders are collecting any money. In his letter, he wrote, "Doing payment of salaries and other allowances is a serious violation of the law and we believe that it is a criminal breach of trust in relation to the employee-company relationships. Therefore, there should be an FIR register under many different sections. '

The Shiv Sena was not behind, his Labor Union Indian Worker Force also wrote a letter to Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and civil aviation minister Suresh Prabhu, demanding immediate end to the Jet Airways crisis. Shiv Sena indicated that it may be that the 'Industrial Action by Owners' action at Mumbai International Airport, which has been the hub for Jet Airways since last 26 years.

Jet Airways’ staff union approaches Mumbai police to seize Naresh Goyal’s passport

Mumbai: Jet Airways employees seek FIR against airline management for not releasing their salaries
