                     By  Preeti Tanwar
King is always comfortable, So are you Mr. Naresh Goyal
Least bothered about the future of Jet airways employees;  Mr. NG, founder and ex-chairman of the airline has chosen to live a comfortable life in his London  house.  A Person who is getting blamed by aviation experts for the current situation of airline is no more responsible to clear the employee’s dues. Employees who played a vital role in making the airline a top player in civil aviation are seeking help from the government and Labour ministry for their three months pending salary, gratuity and funds.
Mr. NG has lovingly bid goodbye to its employees by just thanking them for their dedication and contribution towards the company. Livelihood runs by money Mr. Goyal, not just by appreciation.
Rejected offers to save Jet
When you have the opportunity to sell a fleet of your loss making venture and you reject it  just by thinking that you can turn around your business because of your networking skills and friends in the places, you are simply asking for  the trouble.
·         A year ago TATA was having eye on buying Jet.
·         There was also an interest from an American investment firm TPG CAPITAL and Indigo.
·         He failed to take the offer of DELTA Airlines as well. Goyal is said to have wanted higher share price from DELTA airlines.
In spite of thinking about saving the debt laden airline, he was in a race of increasing the share prices.  Increased share price allowed him to liquidate some of his shares to investors seeking loan against it.
Self inflicted decision maker
Goyal exerted full control over the company and had a single management team, headed by himself, running all Jet's operations. Let’s have a look over the various decisions taken by him individually which leaded the company to present situation.
·         He decided to acquire Air Sahara in 2006 for $500 million despite being advised by advisors of paying too much for Air Sahara. This decision troubled the airline for years and later with additional costs, taxes as well as legal and manpower issues.
·         In 2011-12 when Jet airways faced its first financial crunch, Goyal used his networking skills and eventually sold 24% of its airline’s stakes to Etihad airlines for nearly $400 million. Being a stakeholder, Etihad looked forward to have a bit  of control to run a sagacious business but Goyal interpreted it as a takeover of his beloved company. A company is bigger than a founder. Founder may want total control but business is not about individual, business is all about practicality, profit and futuristic outlook.
·          In 2013, in order to compete with low cost carriers SpiceJet and Indigo, Jet lowered its fare prices without reducing its expensive services. Jet airlines was draining money but still Goyal configured its plane like palaces with 300 nated seats much below the global standard. They spent more than they earned and kept accruing debts.
·         3 years ago, Goyal aspired for extending business on international routes decided to purchase 22 wide body aircraft that too on quite higher price than the market which caused huge cash depletion.
Strategy of self profit at any cost
Naresh Goyal used to take a prompt action whenever it’s a winning situation for the competitor.
·         In 1996, The Tata group wanted to create a new domestic airline in joint venture with Singapore airlines. To avoid competition, Goyal manipulated a government policy using his network skills and ensured forbidden of foreign airlines to take an equity stake in joint ventures with Indian aviation companies. That’s how as a dragon he ate up an infant lion and TATA group couldn’t start a new airline.  As per this directive, Naresh Goyal also had to take back control of Trade Winds from its foreign investors Gulf Air, and Kuwait Airways, but that was less inconvenient than having a new competitor in the market.
·         In 2012, government issued a new policy permitting investment of upto 49 percent by a foreign airline in a domestic carrier. This policy was issued to help reviving sinking Kingfisher airline that time. But, by the time KFA could take advantage of it, Directorate General of Civil Aviation(DGCA) suspended KFA’s license. And Jet became the first airline to take full advantage of the new policy. In 2013, Etihad bought 24 percent stake in Jet Airways for $379 million. Don’t know it was just a coincidence that policy favoured Jet in spite of sinking KFA or it was well planned by Mr. NG’s high profile link ups.
·         One more policy came into favour of Mr. NG which permitted holding of up to 100 percent by a NRI. MR. NG was able to get US citizenship very well till that policy came into place. Such a coincidence again it was.
·         In 2004, One more policy named 5/20 was announced whose timing again worked in Jet’s favour. Policy prevented new domestic airlines from going international unless they had been in operation for five years or has 20 aircraft in their fleet. Jet airways became international in 2005. Policy helped in refraining new domestic airlines to put its feet into international market when Jet became international.

Despite so many coincidences in favour of Mr. NG’s airline, the airline is at the verge of bankruptcy now.
Mr. NG believed in alluring customers with its airline’s executive class luxuries along with lowering down the fare price under competition.  They paid higher salaries than most rivals. Outsourced services were also getting paid higher from the airline in comparison to the other rivals.
Consequently airline piled up with huge debt of over Rs. 8000 crore. Timing could have been on Mr. Goyal’s side once again, but the crucial general election has taken all the limelight and no one is bothered about Jet.
Smart Mr. Goyal also found it appropriate to take aside from the chairmanship quietly and left the entire mess in lender’s (specially SBI) hand rather than showing responsibility to save JET, it’s beloved company.
Being a NRI he is not liable for any scrutiny. He has logically chosen it to watch the entire show in a relax manner without any liability on his head.
A lot to learn from you Mr. NG. Great going.
