Aircraft Data Communications Specialist

Introduction

You operate at the intersection between aviation and IT. You manage and maintain the systems that enable data communication between aircraft and the ground.

Thanks to your work, pilots can communicate with air traffic controllers or KLM specialists via special chat functionality. For example, if it turns out that the aircraft engine, whose status is monitored in real-time, is displaying excessive consumption, action can be taken. This could be an indication that there is an imminent engine failure. In such a case, communication between air and ground is essential. The chat functionality also ensures that the fuel supplier at London Heathrow receives a message when no fuel is needed so that the unnecessary trips he made to KLM Cityhoppers until recently are a thing of the past. After all, now he knows that they still have enough fuel with them to make the return trip. And then there are our colleagues in the cabin, they get flight information through their screens, which has been transported through your system, so they can inform passengers about their connecting flights before touch-down.

What can you get out of the aircraft, and how can that best serve the demand from the business? This is a question you ask yourself every day

What are you going to do?

Your work is critical to the flight operations and aircraft maintenance of the KLM Group. But your work scope extends beyond that. Sometimes you’ll be programming at home or at the office, and on other days you can be found in the cockpit. You’ll also be part of contract negotiations or working with various stakeholders to design new software solutions while using your (aircraft) IT and business knowledge.

The impact of what you do is big. In fact, without data communication and the software you developed, tickets would be far too expensive and aircraft maintenance very inefficient... Probably, there would be no flying at all!
