Panic in the Skies: Boeing 737 Drops 26,000 Feet as Japan Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Osaka

The aircraft encountered a mid-air mechanical issue that triggered a rapid descent from approximately 36,000 feet to just under 10,500 feet in under 10 minutes.

When a Boeing 737 on a Japan Airlines Aircraft (JL8696) from Shanghai, China to Tokyo, Japan abruptly dropped 26,000 feet, the passengers allegedly had to put on breathing masks, which was a horrifying experience.

The passengers were afraid that the jet might crash. While others started writing down their wills and messaging loved ones with private information like bank PINs and insurance data, others were startled awake.

Operating under a codeshare arrangement between Japan Airlines and its low-cost subsidiary, Spring Japan, the flight took off on June 30 from Shanghai Pudong Airport on its way to Tokyo Narita Airport. The South China Morning Post reported that 191 individuals were on board.

Around 18:53 Hrs. local time, the plane experienced a mechanical problem in midair, which caused it to rapidly descend from about 36,000 feet to just under 10,500 feet in less than 10 minutes, according to an Associated Press story.

According to the report, the Captain had to declare an emergency and reroute the Aircraft to Kansai International Airport in Osaka when a pressurisation system alert was triggered during the descent.

Oxygen masks were withdrawn as cabin pressure decreased. As a flight attendant gives directions, footage from the flight shows passengers wearing breathing masks who are clearly scared.

At 20:50 Hrs local time, the plane made a safe landing in Osaka despite the hysteria. There were no reported injuries.

The event fuels the escalating worries about Boeing aircraft. A tragic Boeing aircraft disaster on the Ahmedabad-London route last month claimed the lives of 275 people. Since then, a number of near-misses have increased criticism of Boeing's safety record, with the majority involving the company's aircraft.
